Icarus - The unfinished clay model

That's me, in 1997, working on Icarus. But my time ran out and I didn't find the support to finish the piece.

If you wont, I will ask you in inglish in other moment?

Hi PanicoWorkshop
I prefer to chat in english because I'm here to make myself known, specially among americans (they are my main public).
This work was not to intended to become a sculpture. The wood structure was developed to allow me a deep search on the geometric qualities of my little plaster model of Icarus.
See the set:
www.flickr.com/photos/poggi00/sets/7215761299 6465003/

And Icarus was created to establish a direct aesthetic dialog with the Rebel Slave. I was in a search for a very particular anatomic detail that would a be proof of my identity. Did you get my point?
See the set:
www.flickr.com/photos/poggi00/sets/7215761294 2001457/

And I did it. The proof was found.
Next year I will finish the translation of a summarized version of my documentary film Icarus, Contemplation & Dream.

Lambrini Milona I get your point and I am amazed by the way you put it. Art is something that "exploded" in you...
Your nudes move according the secret aesthetic rules... a viewer gets an impression of dynamics and harmony that can't be explained by logical analysis... they can "only" be felt...
People will always misunderstand something that is beyond their perception...
MichelAngelo BuonaRoti To be perfectly honest, Lambrini, a falling body has more in common with my nudes than a perfect ride of a surfer. My nudes are idealized human forms where every movement has an aesthetic-geometric definition. And I create them by intuition. The visual aspect of my nudes are far beyond the natural human body. The language of my art identity comes from the well known greek-roman sculpture. But the misunderstanding starts when people think this is my choice in art. They don't believe on it as my natural gift. How can I explain to them that I never chose art once in my life? My goal in life was exactly to investigate my natural art as a proof of the transcendent.

Fair Use!!!!

This is a very strange situation. YouTube has notified me that the audio's right of my video The Messiah (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oD597DOsAvk) is owned by Sony Music. And what YouTube and Sony Music decided to do? They are simply showing ads next to my video. If Sony Music don't mind that I show my art using the music of its artists, why Germany decided to block it?
My situation is a clear case of "Fair Use": there is no profit and I'm attracting the youngest to art in the most effective way.
I would be very happy to work with them (YouTube, Sony Music and Germany) but they prefered to take advantage on me or just to segregate me.
Now I ask everybody: who is committing a crime?

Old Head

Old Head - Cabeça Velha, originally uploaded by MichelAngelo▲.

Study for a head - The Resurrection
Conte chalk on paper. 1988.

A lot of people don't understand the reason why I decided to present myself as Michelangelo. That's a copy of one of my answers:

I just finished an entire book explaining why I decided to assume my identity. I confess that I prefer to go surfing and dating than talking about my personal story, but it's a spiritual duty to me to explain myself.

In 1994, when I started presenting myself as an artist and showing my art work, EVERYBODY said: "Hey, all these stuffs are from Michelangelo! Don't you have anything created by you?"
Is terrible to hear this after 10 years drawing and sculpting only by intuition JUST to discover a proof of my identity as Michelangelo.
And why I did that? Because of the remembering of Vittoria Colonna's death, in 1983. That emotional trauma IS the experience that revealed my identity. My art is a natural expression of being who I am.

This is a 25 years secret. I was going to stay my whole life with my mouth shut. I was happy as Eurico Poggi and I tried to find another art expression where I could hide my famous identity, because I needed to be accept somewhere and get a job. But everything always went wrong.

I'm atheist, but there's another dimension in contatc with me since 1979. That other dimension demanded me to tell my story and say who I truly am, otherwise I would never find a solution to my life. And that's exactly what I'm doing all over the internet.

To be honest, I think the other dimension is right. If I started posting my art work as Eurico Poggi, I would repeat the same situation happened in the 90's. All the comments would be: Hey Eurico, your art is simillar to Michelangelo's art! Sorry, but I'm sick of that.

I'm just a surfer who works for Rio's carnival production. I really don't care about other people's beliefs. But nowadays I HAVE TO tell my story.
Next year I will put english subtitles in my documentary film Icarus, Contemplation & Dream, and finally break the language barrier.

Thank you very much for the opportunity to explain myself once again! :-)

Esquece o mármore, Alexander. Mármore limita o movimento do corpo no espaço.

The Icarus Challenge

The Icarus Challenge, originally uploaded by MichelAngelo▲.

Close-up of the front view of Icarus final plaster model. 1986.

The Icarus Challenge:
To start understanding the essence of Icarus body, just try to repeat his gesture and torso movement in front of a mirror. No matter how your body is different from him, just try it and observe your reflecting image. Compare what you saw in the mirror to Icarus expression.
To make a more accurate comparison, take a picture of a male friend with body features close to Icarus repeating the sculpture pose. Do it. See the visual result you've achieved. And then, tell me what did you learn with this simple experience.

Probably is, tony. The styrofoam produced in Brazil has many levels of density. I use a type called P-1, or PF. The F-1 is not flammable. I heard that the F-5 type is hard as concrete.

Garota de Ipanema - Carnival 2008

Styrofoam sculpture for the carnival parade. 2008.

edinei montingelli says:

Icarus - Geometric Structure

The battle between the normal logic of being and the madness that I was involved in took place. The result of this battle is the wood structure called Icarus (this sculpture was created to allow me an accurate comparison with the Rebel Slave), where I found a lot of 3-dimensional qualities defining my natural identity as Michelangelo

Ype wood, screws and plastic wire netting. 1986-96.

aongarcia says:
These look like fish caught in nets, till one looks closely. What interesting art. Close up, this looks like a man, bending over and carrying a cross, and there are bullets protruding from all over him. So I see this as anti-war.

MichelAngelo▲ says:
Someday my documentary film "Icarus, Contemplation & Dream" will be translated to english and you will understand that thing.
This is a crucified lifetime. This is the best part of my youth transformed in a new kind of crucifixion: body and cross are mixed.

Love each one of your cabezas; they run the gamut of emotions and each is drawn so expertly. If I had time, I'd comment on each. This one is the only one that looks mean, or maybe he is tortured.

MichelAngelo▲ says:
Hi aongarcia
I really appreciate to read your comments. I always learn a new word! I'm doing everything to improve my english. But I have to confess that your analysis of my madonnas brought me back the years of complete immersion in my art. The doubts about the expression of a single detail, technical decisions, etc.
Yes, this head looks very tortured indeed and don't want to remember why. I'm choosing the images that I think are the best to explain my story and this is no easy task: there's an ocean of photos here. Photos of a lifetime I prefer to forget.
Posted 5 months ago. ( permalink | delete | edit )

aongarcia says:
Michelangelo, I hope you are famous; you certainly deserve to be. You also deserve more than I can give you: I would like to spend days looking at just your photo stream, to do it justice. Are you famous yet? An ocean of work...how wonderful. It took that life time (some of which you prefer to forget) to make you into the wonderful artist you are now. Cheers! A toast!!!!

MichelAngelo▲ says:
Hi aongarcia
I'm a famous styrofoam sculptor among the people who work for Rio's carnival. All these pieces I'm uploading wasn't exposed before. Never. I'm doing this because is too sad to get old and see the effect of time destroying everything.
Thanks for your words again. You are really awaking me! The forgotten meaning of my art is been recovered from the botton of this dusty life.
